Understanding Your Local Spa’s Massage Menu

If you've had a rough week, you're feeling stressed out, or you just need some time to yourself, there's no better way to relax and rejuvenate than to head over to your local spa and get a good massage. As great as the massage services are at a spa, many people shy away from going to a spa to get a massage because they feel a little overwhelmed when they walk in. One of the first things you will be asked when you arrive is what type of massage it is that you want. Here is a guide to help you understand the different types of massages.

Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage is probably one of the most popular types of massages people go for at the spa. This is a full-body rubdown that gently tends to all of your body from head to toe. Before the massage, you will get undressed, typically down to your undergarments, and cover yourself with a sheet. As the massage therapist works to massage different parts of your body, they will uncover those parts by removing the sheet. A Swedish massage can be different according to the masseuse, but most of them use a range of techniques to gently loosen knots in your muscles.

Hot Stone Massage

Just as it sounds, a hot stone massage involves using heated stones to gently knead your muscles. The stones generally used are large and rounded and may be used in addition to the masseuse's hands, not all by themselves. Hot stone massages are popular because they can help increase blood flow to certain areas of your body, then reduce tension. For more effective treatment, the masseuse may also use cold stones in collaboration with the hot stones to create a more relaxing effect.

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage combines the power of essential oils and their natural healing properties with gentle touch therapy. You can usually pick and choose what type of aromatherapy massage you prefer to help alleviate your specific symptoms. For example, lemon balm or jasmine essential oils may be diffused while you get a massage to help promote stress relief and relaxation, or eucalyptus essential oils may be applied to your skin if you have had a cold or a congested sinus. Aromatherapy massages can be targeted to specific areas of the body, like your shoulders and back, but they can also be a full-body experience.
